#LohrThoughts is Thought-Leadership

“People think that plumbing is simple, but it is highly complex. Like strategy, systems-thinking is needed in order to avoid second-order consequences.”

Plumbing engineering industry outlook

Plumbing science is shifting quickly. The challenges of water conservation and water safety are just two examples of plumbing resiliency concerns. Understanding water quality will also become more crucial for plumbing engineering professionals moving forward. Therefore, professional development in the form of plumbing certifications and plumbing engineering licensing will be vital to help meet these challenges. But that won’t be enough. We need to change the conversation about plumbing engineerin…

The plural sector and plumbing

I’d like to think that Prof. Mintzberg would view the ANSI-accredited process in a positive light. I imagine he would like the diverse representation in the process so that the perspectives and needs of different stakeholders are considered while being responsive and accountable to our 21st-century society's needs. In order to solve 21st-century society plumbing needs, we need engineering firms to support their experts and to “walk the walk, and not just talk the talk.”

The water-energy nexus and water conservation

“We need to remember that water is energy intensive. For us to have water, we need cost-effective, dense and reliable energy sources. Plumbing systems require energy. For safety reasons, and based on current technological limitations, plumbing system energy reduction should be evaluated with extreme scrutiny. Finally, we need to take a systems approach when evaluating water conservation and energy reduction, both within the building and without. Only this type of holistic evaluation will allow us to make the best design happen inside the building.”
